Gamble, William Leonard

 

William Leonard Gamble was born on the 5th October 1909. He was the tenth child of Thomas Gamble, an iron moulder, and his wife Ellen, nee Goodman. When William was an infant the Gamble family lived at 5, Clara Street, Leicester.

In 1937 William married Emily Woodier, and the couple set-up home at 36, Oakland Avenue, Thurmaston. In 1939 William was working as a fruit salesman. However, by the end of the war he was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

William and Emily had three children.

William Leonard Gamble passed away during 1984.

 

Garner, Charles

 

Charles Garner was born on the 28th May 1905.

In 1929 Charles married Constance, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Bates of Thurmaston.

In 1939 Charles, who was working as a bricklayer, was living with his wife and their son, David, at 268, Main Street, Thurmaston, next door to the White Hart Inn.

In 1945 Charles was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Garner, Frederick Stanley

Stan Garner

 

Frederick Stanley Garner was born in Leicester on the 6th January 1906. He was the son of Frederick Garner and his wife Elizabeth, nee Hall. Stan Garner, as he was known, was from a family that were part of a long line of Garners that were from Thurmaston.

Stan Garner spent his younger years at Syston, and like his father he worked in the cane trade. In 1934 he married Violet Annie Whittaker and for several years the couple lived with Violet's parents at 20, Albert Street, Syston. In 1939 Stan was employed as a shoe factor's orders clerk. Eventually, the couple moved into rented accommodation at 75, Checkland Road, Thurmaston.

During the early part of the 1939-45 War Stan was a volunteer air raid warden in Thurmaston, but was called-up into the Royal Air Force in 1942. He initially carried out home service, but was later posted to Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. There, as Corporal F. S. Garner, he ran a supply depot. He remained in Sierra Leone for the remainder of the war.

Stan Garner died in 1968, leaving his wife Violet, who died in 2000, aged 91 years. The three children from their marriage live in Syston, Leicestershire; Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands; and London.

 

Gee, Percy

 

In 1945 Percy Gee of 218, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesaty's Forces.

 

Gibbons, Colin Oswald, D.F.M.

Collin Gibbons


Colin Oswald Gibbons the only son of Mr. Cecil Harold Gibbons and his wife Clara, nee Hill. In 1928 the Gibbons family lived at a house called Iredale, in Oakland Avenue, Thurmaston. Before the war the Gibbons family moved to Poynton, Cheshire.

During 1944 Flight Sergeant, 1490461, Colin Oswald Gibbons, R.A.F.V.R. was posted as missing. He was held as a prisoner of war in Germany.

Sergeant Gibbons, D.F.M.

Godwin, Robert Wilding

 

Robert Wilding Godwin was born in the Lambeth district of London on the 1st November 1916. He was the son of John Reginald Godwin and Adeline Mary, nee Wilding

In 1936 he married Sibelle May D. Maxwell. In 1939 Robert, his wife, and family, lived at 184, Dudley Road, Birmingham. Robert worked as a production engineer for a machinery manufacturer.

During the war Robert joined the army. Whilst serving as Sergeant, 2590507, R. W. Godwin, of the Royal Corps of Signals, he died on the 10th September 1943. He was 26 years old.

He is interred in Catterick Garrison Cemetery, Yorkshire, England (Church of England Section, Grave 232). He is also commemorated on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

After the war Sibelle May D. Godwin lived in Stafford where she was remarried in 1953 to William C. Belson.

 

Gooch, Kenneth Reginald

 

Kenneth Reginald Gooch was born in Essex on the 26th September 1916. He was the son of Frank Bedford.Gooch and his with Elizabeth Emma, nee Arnold. Kenneth had several siblings.

In 1939 Kenneth was living with his parents at 134, Cranley Drive, Ilford, Essex. Kenneth worked as a casual labourer. In 1942, in Essex, he married Elizabeth Wood.

However, by late 1945 Kenneth was serving with His Majesty's Forces, and at that time he and Elizabeth were resident at 14, Colby Road, Thurmaston.

In later life, and until his death in 1982, he lived at 270, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston.

 

Goodacre, Leslie Edward

 

Leslie Edward Goodacre was born in Leicestershire on the 28th April 1912. He was the son of Fred Goodacre and his wife Rose Goodacre, nee Montgomery.

In 1939 Leslie and his wife Frances Eleanor, nee Hawley, lived at 8, Alexandra Street, Thurmaston. At that time Leslie worked as a journeyman printer's compositor.

In 1945 Les Goodacre, as he was known, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

In about the late 1970's Les and Frances Goodacre retired to Weston-super-mare. He died there in about 2001, his wife died during 2002.

 

Goodridge, Kenneth John Mawby

 

Kenneth John Mawby Goodridge was born in Leicestershire on the 15th January 1924. He was the son of Richard E. Goodridge and his wife Ethel A. Goodridge, nee Mawby.

In 1939 Kenneth was living with his parents at 3, Westdown Drive, Thurmaston. Kenneth's father worked as a counting house clerk at a shoe factory. By 1945 Kenneth was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Kenneth John Mawby Goodridge died in Leicestershire during 1992.

 

Gorman, John

 

In 1945 John Gorman, who was resident at the Manor Hotel, Leicester Road, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Granger, Donald Arthur William

 

In 1945 Donald Arthur William Granger of 308, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Grant, Alfred

 

Alfred Grant was born in Leicester during 1924. He was the son of Alfred and Matilda Grant.

In 1939 Alfred's parents lived at 2, Silverdale Drive, Thurmaston. Alfred's father was a master builder. Alfred was employed by Frigidaire Limited, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire. During the war Alfred joined the Royal Navy.

On the 20th July 1940, whilst serving as Able Seaman (Radar), C/JX 409108, A. Grant, he was aboard the fleet destroyer HMS Isis. The ship was on an anti-submarine patrol in the English Channel, off Normandy, when she suffered an explosion, probably caused by a mine. The ship sank taking with her 154 of her crew, Alfred Grant was amongst their number. His parents at 2, Silverdale Drive, were informed of their loss.

Alfred Grant is commemorated on the Chatham War Memorial, Chatham, Kent (Panel 75,2) and on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

 

Greasley, Robert Ernest

Robert Ernest Greasley was born in Birstall, Leicestershire, on the 10th August 1904. He was the seventh child of Arthur Greasley, a market gardener, and his wife Mary Ann, nee Coley.

In 1939 Robert was single and living at 9, White Horse Lane, Birstall; at that time he was working as a landscape gardener. However, in 1945 he was resident at 409, Syston Road, Thurmaston, and was serving in His Majesty's Forces.

He was married to Doris Elsie Toon of Thurmaston. Robert Ernest Greasley passed away during 1970.

Greaves, Norman Harold

 

Norman Harold Greaves was born on the 7th January 1922. He was the son of Harold Henry Greaves and his wife Beatrice Ethel, nee Bailey.

In 1939 Norman was living with his mother, his married sister, Joan Wicks, and other family members at 17, Winster Drive, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed as a hosiery trimmer. In 1945 Norman was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

After the war he married Doreen M. Lewin.

Norman Harold Greaves passed away during 1994.

 

Green, Dennis Braithwaite

 

Dennis Braithwaite Green was the son of Ernest Green and his wife Ethel Maud, nee Jones.

In 1939 Dennis was living with his parents at 429, Syston Road, Thurmaston. Dennis's father worked as a builder's labourer.

During the course of the war Dennis joined the army. On the 10th September 1944, whilst serving in Italy as Lance Corporal, 14510407, D. B. Green, 2/5th Battalion, The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey), he died. He was 24 years' old.

He is buried in the Coriano Ridge Cemetery, Italy. He is also commemorated on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

Dennis's parents are interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

Dennis's brother Owen Ernest Green served in the R.A.F. during the war, and his brother Stanley Leonard Green also served in the forces.

 

Green, Eric

Eric Green RASC

 

Eric Green was born on the 27th January 1918.

In 1939 Eric was living with his widowed mother Mary Ann, nee Hewick, at 232, Main Street, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed as a confectionery warehouseman.

During the war Eric served as Driver, 138320, E. Green, Royal Army Service Corps (R.A.S.C.).

Eric Green passed away in Leicestershire during 2000. Eric's mother is interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

Driver Eric Green

 

Green, James Frederick

 

James Frederick Green was born in 1906, in the parish of Birstall, Leicestershire. He was the 5th child and second son of Ernest Harry Green and his wife Rebecca, nee Bell. When James was around one year old the Green family moved to Thurmaston, and set-up home at 6, Havelock Cottages. James's father, who had been born in Lichfield, in around 1868, worked as a cowman on a farm.

During 1920 James's mother died and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery. Six years later his father married Annie L. Iliffe.

In 1939 James Frederick Green was living in the household of Reginald and Annie Freer, 48, Garden Street, Thurmaston. His father and step-mother lived at 11, Forest Avenue, Thurmaston.

During the course of the war James joined the army. On the 21st May 1943, whilst serving as Private, 1680079, J. F. Green, of the Pioneer Corps he died. He was 36 years' old. He left a widow, Dora Green.

He is buried in Thurmaston Cemetery (Section C, Grave 796) and is also commemorated on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

 

Green, Owen Ernest

 

Owen Ernest Green was born in Leicestershire during 1914. He was the son of Ernest Green and his wife Ethel Maud, nee Jones.

In 1939 Owen, whose home address was that of his parents, 429, Syston Road, Thurmaston, was serving in the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.). He was serving as A.C.2., 627021, O. E. Green, at No. 2. R.A.F. Depot, Cardington, Bedfordshire.

In 1942 he married Kathleen M. Riley and his home address was Noblethorpe, Melton Road, Thurmaston. At that time he was still serving with the Royal Air Force.

Owen Ernest Green died during 1953. His parents are interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

During the war Owen's brother Dennis Braithwaite Green died serving with the army, his brother Stanley Leonard Green also served in the forces.

Stanley Leonard Green was born in Leicestershire during 1920, the son of Ernest Green and his wife Ethel Maud, nee Jones.

In 1939 Stanley was living with his parents at 429, Syston Road, Thurmaston. Stanley's father worked as a builder's labourer.

In 1945, and into late 1947, Stanley was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

During the war Stanley's brother Owen Ernest Green served in the R.A.F., whilst his brother Dennis Braithwaite Green died serving with the army.

Green, Thelma Edna Mavis

 

Thelma Edna Mavis Green was born in Leicestershire on the 1st December 1916.

In 1939 Thelma was living at 74, Lancashire Street, Leicester. She was then working as a cutter for a hosiery manufacturer.

In 1945 Thelma's home address was 28, Melton Avenue, Thurmaston, and at that time she was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces..

Thelma Edna Mavis Green passed away during 2004.

 

Grundy, Thomas Whyman

 

Thomas Whyman Grundy was born in Leicestershire on the 21st November 1909. He the seventh child of Edwin Grundy, a boot and shoe worker, and his wife Louisa Dolly, nee Pignutt. When Thomas was an infant he lived with his parents at 118, Weymouth Street, Leicester. In 1932 Thomas's father died and was buried in Thurmaston Cemetery.

In 1939 Thomas was single and living with his widowed mother, Louisa, at 110, Colby Drive, Thurmaston. At that time he was working as a dustman. The following year he married Kathleen Wright.

Thomas was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces between 1942, at least, and into 1945.

In 1945 Thomas and Kathleen, lived at 130, Colby Drive, Thurmaston. Thomas's mother died during 1955 and was interred with her late husband.

Kathleen Grundy died on the 19th October 1973 and Thomas died on the 27th August 1990. The couple are interred together in Thurmaston Cemetery.

 

Hall, George Edward

 

In 1945 George Edward Hall of Cherry Dene Cottages, Barkby Thorpe Road, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Hardman, Arthur

 

In 1945 Arthur Hardman of Colby Drive, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Harrall, Eric Richard

 

Eric Richard Harrall was born in Lincolnshire on the 30th June 1913. He was the only child of Henry Harrall and his wife Alice H., nee Tripp.

In 1934 Eric married Gladys L. Lawson.

In 1939 Eric, with his wife, and daughter, were living at 2, Church Hill Road Extension, Thurmaston. At that time Eric was working as a hosiery under-foreman.

In 1945 Eric, then of 7A, Church Hill Road Extension, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces..

Eric Richard Harrall passed away on the 13th January 1989.

 

Harris, Eric

 

Eric Harris was born on the 2nd July 1919. He was the son of Thomas and Minnie Harris.

In 1939 Eric was living with his parents at 35, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed by a hosiery company as a mechanical engineer.

In 1945 Eric was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Eric Harris passed away in Leicestershire in around early 1982. His parents are interred together in Thurmaston Cemetery.

 

Harris, George Caress

 

George Caress Harris was born in Leicestershire on the 8th January 1914.

In 1939 George, his wife, Doris, and son, were living at 50, Highway Road, Thurmaston. At that time George was working as a master builder.

In 1945 George was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces, and may have been so until 1947. In 1945 he was resident at 10, Colby Drive, Thurmaston.

George Caress Harris died in Leicestershire during 1985.

 

Harrison, John Shirley

 

In 1945 John Shirley Harrison of 24, Oakland Avenue, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Hartshorn, Alan

 

In 1945 Alan Hartshorn of 93, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces, and remained with them until late 1947. His home address was that of his mother-in-law and father-in-law.

During the war Alan Hartshorn married Jessie Enid Josephine Chandler.

In 1945 Mrs. Jessie Enid Josephine Hartshorn was also serving with the forces.

Alan and Jessie had one child, a daughter.

 

Hartshorn, Frank William

 

 

Frank William Hartshorn was born on the 7th August 1913. He was the son of Gordon Hartshorn and his wife Phyllis, nee Toon.

In 1939 Frank William was living with his parents and siblings at 76, Main Street, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed as a shoe repairer and van driver. The following year he married Ida K. Allen.

During the war, from 1940 onwards, Frank served as an army signalman.

Frank William Hartshorn died in Leicestershire during 1968.

 

Hartshorn, Jessie Enid Josephine

 

Jessie Enid Josephine Chandler was born in Leicestershire during 1924. She was the daughter of Alfred J. Chandler and his wife Florence, nee Rayns.

In 1939 Jessie was living with her parents at 93, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston. Jessie's father was a press telegraphist.

During the war Jessie became the wife of Alan Hartshorn. In 1945 she was serving in His Majesty's Forces.

In 1945 John Charles Hartshorn of 291, Main Street, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces..

 

Hartshorn, Kenneth

 

 

Kenneth Hartshorn was born in around early 1924. His parents were Wilfred Hartshorn and his wife Evelyn May Hartshorn, nee Mould.

In 1939 Kenneth was living with his parents at 38, Main Street, Thurmaston. His father worked as a gas stoker.

During the war Kenneth served in the Royal Navy. Able Seaman Hartshorn served in the Middle East.

Kennth's parents are interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

 

 

Hartshorn, Owen William

Owen Hartshorn

 

Owen William Hartshorn was born on the 22nd April 1921 and was baptised at Thurmaston parish church on the 2nd October that same year. He was the son of Frank Hartshorn, a gardener, and his wife Alice Mabel.

In 1939 Owen lived with his parents at 189, Main Street, Thurmaston. His father was then employed as a general labourer making concrete.

On the 19th February 1942 Owen William Hartshorn was enlisted into the army. On the 10th May 1945 he was serving as Lance Sergeant, 4868440, O. W. Hartshorn, of the Mortar Platoon, 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. He and 12 others were killed on that day in an ammunition dump explosion, which occurred whilst men of the mortar and anti-tank platoons were involved in disarming German troops of the Hermann Göring Parachute Division, at Baarn, near Hilversum, in the Netherlands.

Lance Sergeant Owen Hartshorn

Owen William Hatrshorn is buried in Hilversum Northern Cemetery, Hilversum, Netherlands (Plot 1E. Row 6. Coll. Grave 10-16) He is commemorated on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

 

Harty, Timothy Joseph

 

In 1939 Louisa Gee was living with her father, Henry, a retired motor driver, and her mother, Lydia, at 23, Methuen Avenue, Thurmaston. The following year Louisa married Timothy Joseph Harty, a manufacturing chemist's despatch clerk, the son of John J. and Bridget Harty of 64, Willowbrook Road, Leicester. Timothy had been born on the 10th August 1911.

In 1945 Timothy was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces and his home address was at 23, Methuen Avenue.

Timothy Joseph Harty passed away in Leicestershire during 1989.

 

Haseldine, Thomas James

 

Thomas James Haseldine was born in Leicester on the 13th November 1903. He was the son of Thomas Joseph Haseldine and his wife Amy Louisa, nee Jarvis. When Thomas was seven years' old the he lived with his parents and two younger brothers in a house on Church Street, Sileby, Leicestershire.

In 1926 Thomas married Gertrude Ellen Allsopp. In 1939 the couple lived at 38, Hill Rise, Thurmaston. At that time Thomas worked as a decorator and sign writer. Thomas was a volunteer member of the Air Raid Precautions (A.R.P.) service.

In 1945 Thomas was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Thomas James Haseldine died in Leicestershire during 1983. Gertrude Ellen Haseldine passed away during 1985.

 

Heathcote, Edwin

 

Edwin Heathcote was born in Thurmaston on the 1st December 1906. He was the son of Alfred Heathcote, a shoefinisher, and his wife Olive, nee Marriott. In 1911 Edwin lived with his parents and four elder sisters at 127, Denman Street, Leicester. Later, the Heathcote family are believed to have been resident in Canal Street, Thurmaston. As a child Edwin attended Thurmaston National School.

In 1935 Edwin married Minnie Haddon. In 1939 Edwin lived with his wife, two daughters, amd son, at 110, Dorset Street, Leicester. At that time he was working as a general labourer in engineering. Minnie worked for a wool spinner. During the 1939-45 war Edwin served with a unit that was part of the 8th Army.

Edwin Heathcote died on the 30th August 1978 and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery. Edwin's widow, Minnie, passed away on the 17th January 1993, she was buried with her late husband. Edwin's parents are also buried in Thurmaston Cemetery.

Hegginson, John

 

John Hegginson, Jack Hegginson as he was known, was born in Bankfoot, Bradford, Yorkshire, on the 22nd December 1906. He was the son of Fred Hegginson, a railway company's boilermaker's assistant, and his wife Ruth, nee Fletcher. When Jack was an infant he lived with his family at 9, Fifth Street, Westley Place, Low Moor, North Bierley, Yorkshire.

In 1931 Jack married Clara Ellen, the daughter of James Edward Bree and his wife Clara, nee Smith. Jack's father-in-law was a veteran of the Great War. From March 1915 he had served with the 4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. However, in 1917, whilst serving with the 7th Battalion, he suffered a gunshot wound to his head. He was subsequently transfered to the Labour Corps, before leaving the army in February 1919. In 1939 Jack's mother-in-law and father-in-law lived at 53, Manor Road, Thurmaston. James Edward Bree worked as an instructor on footwear machinery operation in a shoe lastiing department.

In 1939 Jack, his wife, and their two children, a son and daughter, lived at 39, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston. At that time Jack worked as a shoe machine operator.

During the war Jack Hegginson served in the Royal Navy.

John Hegginson passed away in Leicestershire in 1972. Clara Hegginson died on the 12th November 1984 and was buried with her late parents and younger brother in Thurmaston Cemetery.

 

Herbert, Walter Raymond

 

Walter Raymond Herbert was born on the 31st May 1924.

In 1945 Walter, of 1, Garden Street, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Walter Raymond Herbert passed away in Leicestershire during 1979.

 

Hewing, Alan

 

Alan Hewing was born in Thurmaston in 1924, the son of James Henry and Hannah Hewing. He was the couple's third child. In 1928 the Hewing family lived at 15, Brook Street, Thurmaston.

During the 1939-45 war Alan Hewing served in the Royal Navy. After the war he and his wife, Winifred Vera, lived at a house in Brook Street, Thurmaston.

His elder brother, James Hewing, served with the 153rd (Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.

 

Hewing, James Jim

Jim Hewing

1939-1945 Star France & Germany Star Defence Medal British War Medal

 

James Hewing, Jim as he was known, was born in Warwickshire on the 21st December 1915. He was the son of James Henry Hewing, a bricklayer, and his wife Hannah, nee Black. In 1928 the Hewing family lived at 15, Brook Street, Thurmaston.

Twenty four years' old Jim Hewing joined the army on the 30th May 1940. Prior to the war he had worked as a gardener. He was enlisted into the 153rd (Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, at Leicester.

At the beginning of the war the Leicestershire Yeomanry had been a cavalry unit, however, in November 1939 it had been converted into the 153rd and 154th Field Regiments of the Royal Artillery. When Jim Hewing joined the 153rd (Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, it operated with the 154th. However, in April 1940 the two regiments parted, each would go on to serve in different theatres of war - for Jim Hewing there would be much training for things to come.

On the 28th June 1944 the 153rd (Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment's 25 pounder guns, each mounted on a Sherman tank chassis, were embarked at Southampton for war service in France. Jim fought with the Regiment as the allied armies pushed back German troops through France, Belgium, Holland and on into the Reich.

James Hewing left the army on the 15th May 1946, when he was transferred to the Class 'Z' of the Territorial army Reserve.

Gunner, 986484, James Hewing was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the British War Medal for his services. He and his wife, Charlotte, nee Harrison, lived at 197, Main Street, Thurmaston.

Gunner James Hewing

Jim Hewing's younger brother, Alan Hewing served in the Royal Navy during the war.

James Hewing died in Leicestershire on the 28th August 1988.

 

Hill, Harry

 

Harry Hill was born on the 7th September 1902.

In 1945 Harry was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces. At that time Harry and Molly's home was named Peacehaven, Manor Road, Thurmaston.

John Hill was born on the 15th October 1917.

In 1942 John married Lilian, the daughter of Arthur Waite and his wife May, nee Hewick. The Waite family lived in a house on Unicorn Street, Thurmaston.

By 1945 John Hill, whose home address was 34, Unicorn Street, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces..

John Hill passed away on the 3rd July 1993 and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

Leonard Hill was born on the 10th February 1910.

In 1932 he married Laura Mary Annie Hewing. In 1939 Leonard and Laura were living at 1, Brook Street, Thurmaston. Leonard worked as a cardboard box cutter.

Hine, Albert Burnley

 

Albert Burnley Hine was born on the 25th April 1914 in the Lewisham district of London. He was the son of Albert William Hine, a house painter, and his wife Esther, nee Withrington.

Prior to Albert's birth his parents were living at 43, Glenwood Road, Lewisham, there they lived with their daughter Winifred Elizabeth Hine, who, like her father, had been born in Catford. Mrs. Hine had been born in Poplar.

In 1939 Albert Burnley Hine married Marjorie Mason in Leicestershire.

During the war he served with His Majesty's Forces, and was still serving in 1945

In 1945 Albert B. and Marjorie Hine's home address was 159, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston.

Albert Burnley Hine died during 2002.

Hollis, George Frederick

 

George Frederick Hollis, junior, was born in Leicestershire on the 13th June 1921. He was the son of George Frederick Hollis, senior, and his wife Adeliza, nee Woodward.

In 1939 George lived with his parents at 340, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed as a grocer's assuistant. His father worked as a heating engineer and plumber.

In 1945 George Frederick Hollis, junior, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

George Frederick Hollis passed away during 1984. His parents are interred together in Thurmaston Cemetery.

 

Hopewell, Albert Ernest

 

Albert Ernest Hopwell was born on the 7th November 1916.

In 1939 Albert was living at 268, Lincoln Road, Peterborough, the home of Herbert and Mabel Parker. Albert was working as an elastic web weaver. The following year Albert married Josephine Eileen Platton, the daughter of William Platton, a bus driver, and his wife Sarah, of 24, Bannerman Road, Leicester.

By 1944 Albert was serving with His Majesty's Forces. He and Josephine were then living at Windermere, Church Hill Road Extension, Thurmaston.

Albert Ernest Hopewell passed away in Leicestershire during 1988. His wife passed away in Leicestershire during 2002.

 

Horsfall, Frederick Joseph

 

Frederick Joseph Horsfall was serving with His Majesty's Forces in 1945, at that time his home address was 32, Main Street, Thurmaston.

Howe, Albert Henry

 

Albert Henry Howe was born on the 8th June 1922. He was the son of Albert E. Howe and his wife Lilian, nee Wardle. Albert Henry's mother died in 1935 and his father was re-married to one Ada Stevenson.

In 1939 Albert Henry lived with his father and step-mother at 256, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston. At that time he worked as a butcher's assistant. His father worked in the shoe trade. In 1945 Albert Henry was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Albert Henry Howe passed away in Leicestershire during 1994.

 

Hughes, Thomas Edmund

Eddy Hughes

 

Thomas Edmund Hughes was born in Thurmaston on the 23rd October 1919.

During 1941 Gunner Eddie Hughes, Royal Artillery, of 9, Alexandra Street, Thurmaston, was captured whilst serving in the Middle East. He was held as a prisoner of war in Italy. He was liberated from captivity in 1945. Prior to the war he worked for the firm of Eatoughs, Syston, Leicestershire.

In 1945, having returned home, he married Margaret B. Betty Buck. After their marriage they lived out their lives at Ashby de la Zouch. Eddie worked throughout his life as a gardener for the National Coal Board. He died in about 1991 and is buried at Ashby de la Zouch.

His younger brother, Ronald Hughes served in His Majesty's Forces during the 1939-1945 war.

 

Hughes, Ronald

Ronald Hughes was born in Thurmaston on the 9th March 1922.

In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy, and carried out training as a seaman at HMS Royal Arthur, the requisitioned Butlin's camp at Skegness. In August 1942, on completion of his training, Ronald Hughes joined the ship's company of the 'M' Class destroyer HMS Meteor, and remained with her until November 1945.

During his time with the ship, between September 1942 and September 1944, Ronald Hughes served in 16 Russian convoys. His ship was involved in the Battle of North Cape on Boxing Day 1943, when the German battleship Scharnhorst was sunk.

He also served aboard HMS Meteor during the allied landings in North Africa - Operation Torch - and the naval action to cover the D-Day landings in Normandy on the 6th June 1944. HMS Meteor was also involved in the Battle of the Ligurian Sea, off Italy, during March 1945.

From November 1945 Ronald Hughes served aboard the fleet minesweeper HMS Albacore, which was tasked for mine clearance operations in the Mediterranean Sea until February 1946. After the war he was awarded the 1939/45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Italy Star and War Medal, he was also awarded an oak leaf emblem, in recognition of being mentioned in a naval despatch.

Petty Officer Steward, D/LX28441, Ronald Hughes left the Royal Navy during November 1946, and returned to the family home at 9, Alexandra Street, Thurmaston. On returning to civilian life he was employed by the confectioners MacIntoshes of Syston. In 1949 Ronald Hughes married Audrey Mahala Moore; the couple lived in Alexandra Street, and had a family. In 1961 the Hughes family moved to a house in Margaret Close, Thurmaston. For most of his working life Ronald Hughes worked for Wadkins, woodworking machinery engineers of Green Lane Road, Leicester.

Mrs. Audrey Hughes passed away during 1991, aged 63 years old. In 1994 H.M. the Queen approved for wear a Soviet commemorative medal, of which Ronald Hughes had been a recipient; the medal, awarded by the Government of the U.S.S.R., was an acknowledgement of the role played by Arctic convoy veterans during the war. Mr. Ronald Hughes died during 2011.

Ronald Hughes elder brother, Thomas Edmund Hughes served in the army during the 1939-1945 war.

Hyam, Edward

 

Edward Hyam was born in Leicester on the 30th May 1904. He was the son of George Osborne Hyam and his wife Hannah, nee Moore. When Edward was seven years' old he lived with his parents and his three elder siblings at 8, Leopold Road, Leicester.

In 1929 Edward married Florence Ida Morley. In 1939 the couple were living with their six year's old son at 432, Melton Road, Thurmaston. At that time Edward was working as a hotel manager. In 1945 Edward was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

Edward Hyam passed away in Leicestershire in around early 1987. His widow, Forence, died in Leicestershire during 1990.

 

Hyman, Jack

Jack Hyman

Jack Hyman was born at Rotherby, Leicestershire, in the year 1910 and grew up in nearby Thrussington. Serving with the Leicestershire Regiment as Private, 4867491, J. Hyman, he fought in North Africa. After the battle of El Alamein he was reported missing, presumed killed. Severely wounded, he was taken to South Africa and, following treatments in hospitals in Johannesburg and Cape Town, would later return to England. The following link will open a picture taken in South Africa.

Following his return to Southampton he received further treatment at Netley Military Hospital. His final treatment was carried out at Leicester Infirmary.

On returning to his wife and family he lived out most of the rest of his life at Thurmaston, until his death on the 13th March 1997. Although he suffered disability as a result of his wartime wounds he enjoyed a full and active life. Prior to the war Jack and his wife Gertrude Lillian Lily (nee Smith) lived at Glenfield, Leicestershire. She moved back to Thurmaston during the war to gain the support of her family who lived in the village.

Jack Hyman is interred in Thurmaston Cemetery along with his wife. She died on the 17th January 1996, aged 83 years. A photograph of two of the children of Jack and Lily Hyman can be seen by clicking on the following link - Brook Street VE-Day Party

Iliffe, John Cleveland

 

John Cleveland Iliffe was born in Canada on the 28th November 1919.

John Cleveland Iliffe of Sunny Slope, Syston Road, Thurmaston, served in the army during the 1949-1945 war. Sunny Slope, was also home to Margaret Ellen Iliffe. His brother Bill Iliffe was killed in action during the war

John Cleveland Iliffe died in Leicestershire in about 1996.

The photograph of John dates to 1965, when he stood as a Conservative Party candidate seeking election to Thurmaston's Parish Council.

Margaret Ellen Iliffe of Sunny Slope, Syston Road, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces in late 1945 until at least 1947. She lived at the same address as Bill Iliffe and John Cleveland Iliffe.

Lance Sergeant, 326674, Bill Iliffe, 153rd (The Leicestershire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery died of head wounds on the 21st November 1945, age 24 years.

Bill was the son of Jack Cleveland Iliffe and Ada Goode Iliffe of Sunny Slope, Syston Road, Thurmaston. Also at his parent's home address was Margaret Ellen Iliffe and John Cleveland Iliffe..

He is commemorated on the War Memorial at both Syston and Thurmaston.

 

Jacques, Tom Harold

 

Tom Harold Jacques was born in Leicester during 1904. He was the son of Tom Jacques, a chimney sweep, and his wife Eliza Ann, nee Riley.

When Tom Harold Jacques was a small boy he lived with his parents and two sisters, Ivy Harriett and Hilda, at 1, Wilton Street, Leicester. Tom Harold attended Bow Street School, Leicester.

In 1945 Tom Harold Jacques was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces; and at that time his home address was 416, Melton Road, Thurmaston.

It is believed that Tom Harold Jacques died in Leicestershire during 1954.

 

James, Walter Edward

Walter Edward James

 

Walter Edward James was born in Leicestershire during 1924, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. James of Thurmaston.

On the 30th November 1944, Private James was in a platoon of 'C' Company, 1st Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI). The commander of Private James' unit, Lieutenant Frank Walker, was an officer in the Green Howards, on attachment to the DLI. Lieutenant Walker and his men were tasked with an objective, the taking of the hamlet of La Capanna, which was occupied by German forces - this was part of the final phase of the fight for the Montone River bridgehead, which had begun on the 24th November 1944.

During the unit's advance towards their objective a concealed German sniper shot dead Lieutenant Walker and three other soldiers, a fourth soldier was wounded in the advance, and he too died on the 30th November 1944. Private James was amongst those that were killed.

Private, 14647782, Walter Edward James, 1st Battalion, DLI was 20 years' old. He was buried in the Forli War Cemetery, Italy (Section V, Row D, Grave 18) . He lies with his comrades who died that day.

He is commemorated on the War Memorial at Thurmaston.

 

Jarvis, George Theodore

 

George Theodore Jarvis was born in Groby, Leicestershire, on the 20th September 1906. He was the son of Arthur William Jarvis, a stone quarryman, and his wife Emma Minnie, nee Dennis. When George was an infant the Jarvis family lived in Groby village.

In 1934 George married Florence Ellen Dickerson. In 1939 the couple were living at 17, Westdown Drive, Thurmaston, and at that time George was working as a wages clerk in an engineering business. In 1945 George was a serving member of the His Majesty's Foreces, and may have been serving as late as 1947.

George Theodore Jarvis passed away in Leicestershire during 1980. George's widow passed away the following year.

 

Jennett, Leo Michael

 

Leo Michael Jennett was born in Leicestershire in 1925. His father was John Jennett and his mother was Kate Jennett, nee Foreman.

In 1945 Leo M. Jennett was a serving member of the armed forces, and remained so until at least 1947. On leaving the forces he returned home to his parents house at 65, Highway Road, Thurmaston.

 

Johnson, Wilfred

 

In 1945 Wilfred Johnson of 116, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Johnstone, Hector James Macdonald

 

Hector James MacDonald Johnstone was born in Whitwick, Leicestershire, on the 28th October 1906. He was the son of Robert and Susannah Johnstone. Hector's father, who was Scots born, was a cordwainer.

In 1930 Hector married Nellie W. Stevenson. In 1939 the couple were resident at 255, Main Street, Thurmaston. Hector worked as a labourer.

In 1945 Hector was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

He died in Leicestershire during 1995.

 

Jones, John Arthur

John Jones

John Jones was born on the 16th December 1918, the son of Walter Henry and Nellie Jones. He came to reside in Thurmaston in 1939. In 1943 his younger brother, Private, 283839, William Jones, was killed in action in North Africa, whilst serving with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.

In 1939 John joined the Leicestershire Regiment, becoming Private, 4859962, J. A. Jones. By 1944 he had been promoted to Sergeant. He fought with 'C' Company, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment in Northern France, after it had arrived at Courcelles on the night of the 3rd-4th July, 1944. During September 1944 he was wounded and returned to England.

He was married to Marjorie Elizabeth Foster and was the father of two children, Michael and Valerie Jones.

He died on the 17th April 1998 and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery.

Jones, Leslie Ernest

 

Leslie Ernest Jones was serving with His Majesty's Forces during 1944-1945. He and his wife, Phyllis Irene, lived at 76, Main Street, Thurmaston.

 

Jordan, John

 

John Jordan was born on the 2nd October 1922.

In 1939 John was living at 23, Westdown Drive, Thurmaston. At that time he was employed as a butchers assistant.

In 1945 John was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Keeling, Dennis

 

Dennis Keeling was born on the 15th June 1920. He was the son of Dan Keeling and his wife Hilda, nee Smith.

In 1939 Dennis was living with his family at 324, Main Street, Thurmaston. During the 1939-1945 War Dennis served in the Royal Navy.

In 1945 he married Velma Lillian Strong the daughter of Walter Strong and his wife Lillian Mary, nee Wright.

Dennis Keeling died on the 2nd February 1996, and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery. His widow, Mrs. Velma Lillian Keeling, died on the 14th June 2008.

 

Keith, Lewis

 

In 1945 Keith Lewis of 157, Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Kershaw, Jesse Jack

 

Jesse Kershaw, Jack Kershaw as he was known, was born in Accrington, Lancashire, on the 22nd March 1911. He was the son of Robert Ernest Kershaw, a wholesale yeast agent, and his wife Edith, nee Hodkinson. When Jack was born the family lived at 116, Dale Street, Accrington.

In 1938 Jack married Joan Constance Hipkiss in the Birmingham area. By the following year the couple were living at 40, Highway Road, Thurmaston. At that time Jack was employed as an inspector for a motor vehicle hire purchase company.

During the war Jack served as a Sub-Lieutenant with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (R.N.V.R.). He was serving in the navy at the war's end.

Jesse Jack Kershaw died in 1992 in the Weston-super-Mare area. Joan passed away in the Staffordshire area in 2002.

 

Ketteringham, Leslie William

 

Leslie William Ketteringham was born in Lincolnshire during 1922.

Leslie was serving with His Majesty's Forces in 1945, at that time his home address was at 26, Church Hill Road, Thurmaston.

He died in Leicestershire during 1951.

 

Kettlewell, Elsie May

 

Elsie May Kettlewell was born in Yorkshire during 1921, the daughter of Robert William Kettlewell. In 1942 she lived at 35, Hillcroft Close, Checkland Avenue, Thurmaston. At that time she was serving as Private W/221703, in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). Elsie May Kettlewell married Ronald Frederick Baldwin.

 

Kirkman, John Arthur

 

In 1943 John married Margaret Pole.

In 1945 John Arthur Kirkman of 2, Rookery Lane, Thurmaston, was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces.

 

Kirton, John Frank

 

John Frank Kirton and his twin sister Florence M. Kirton were born in the Grantham District of Lincolnshire on the 31st March 1919. They were the children of Isaac George Kirton (1886-1968) and his wife Elizabeth Kirton, nee Cooper. During his early married life Isaac George Kirton worked as a farm labourer in and around Nottinghamshire. He and his wife had several children prior to the birth of their twins.

In 1939 Isaac George and Elizabeth Kirton were resident at 25, Roundway Road, Thurmaston, where they lived with five of their children, one of whom was John.

In 1945 John was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces. After the war John married and he and his wife lived and had a family in Leicestershire.

John Frank Kirton passed away on the 7th March 2010. His body was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery on the 18th March 2010.

 

Knight, Cliff

 

Cliff Knight was born on the 8th June 1907.

In 1930 he married Connie Noble. In 1939 he and his wife were living at 247, Main Street, Thurmaston. He was employed as a clay roofing tile maker. Connie worked for a cardboard box maker.

In 1945 Cliff was a serving member of His Majesty's Forces..

Cliff Knight died in Leicestershire in about 1982.

 

Knight, George Harry

 

George Harry Knight was serving with His Majesty's Forces during 1943-1945. He and his wife, Myrtle, lived at 56, Sandiacre Drive, Thurmaston.
