Victory Medal

This particular Victory Medal was sent to me by Martin Wagner ([email protected]) and contains the Lys clasp (not to be confused with the Ypres-Lys clasp) which was only rewarded to about "500 Americans participated in the campaign, including troops of the 16th Engineers, 28th Aero Squadron, and 1st Gas Regiment." This medal also has a Meuse-Argonne clasp and a Defensive Sector clasp. "Fantasy" Navy WWI VM bar (Siberia)

This bar is typical of what I believe to be a cast piece. As you can see the background behind "Siberia" is pebbled, and that's a dead giveaway of a non-official bar. That is not to say that all smooth bars are 'kosher'.

Some, but very few, navy men were authorized to wear both an army & navy combination, but they are scarce and hard to prove.

VM bar = Victory Medal bar (or clasp)

If you ever get a real interest in these WWI VMs you need to but Laslo's book on them. A good investment at about $30.

About those conventions & reunions. Many vets who were entitled to campaign bars thought that they should have others that were never official. Some of those were: Alsace-Lorraine, Army of Occupation, Soissons, Chateau Thierry, etc. There are about a dozen of these known, some marked MADE IN FRANCE, others unmarked. Some are marked on the back with an "H", and those were made for collectors.
