John A. Hughes, Jr.

1842-1862

John A, Hughes, Jr., was born in 1842 to John A, Sr. and Mary "Polly" Bass Hughes. He enlisted at Daleville, Ala. Mar 8, 1862 as Pvt, Co G, 33rd Ala Vol. Hughes was one of the seveteen soldiers who perished in the train wreck near Cleveland, TN. on Nov 4, 1862.

John's brother, Burney Hughes, also enlisted with the 33rd Ala Vols. He served as a Lt in Co G, and also Lt, McGowan's Arty Corps. Burney was born Dec 18, 1842, and died in a hunting accident on Feb 13, 1905 in Houston County, Ala. He is buried at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Cemetery, west of Dothan, Houston County. Burney married Lydia Purvis.
