Liste QUEBEC-HESSIANS

QUEBEC-HESSIANS Mailing List

The QUEBEC-HESSIANS List is discussing those auxiliary soldiers who were supplied by German princes to the British King George III for the defence of Canada during the American Revolution

Between 1776 and 1783, over 2 500 troops of the Brunswick, Hesse-Hanau, Anhalt-Zerbst, and part of the Lossberg and Knyphausen regiments of the Hesse-Kassel troops were stationned in Quebec. At the end of the war, close to 2 000 chose to stay in Quebec and most of them married French-Canadian women.
The integration went so well for many of them that even their names were « translated » to french !

The QUEBEC-HESSIANS list is a fine tool for the descendants of those auxiliary soldiers in search of their origins. The list was initiated by John Helmutt Merz.

The current list administrator is bilingual, therefore all messages can be posted either in french or english (or both !). Subcription is free.

How to subscribe to the List : send a message to

 QUEBEC-HESSIANS-L-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the message Subject and body) the command  subscribe

and no additional text (or punctuation). You will then recieve a confirmation message from Rootsweb.

All the messages of the list are archived. To search the archives :
