Brigadier General Dennis K. Hummel is the vice commander of Aeronautical Systems Center, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

General Hummel was born in 1943, in Waverly, Iowa, and graduated from Charles City (Iowa) Community High School in 1961. He earned a bachelor's degree in literature from Coe College in 1965 and a master's in business administration degree from Auburn University in 1972. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1970, Armed Forces Staff College in 1977 and Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1985.

After being commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, the general entered the aircraft maintenance career field in March 1966. He was initially assigned to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., where he served as a flightline maintenance officer with the 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing and maintenance supervisor with the 100th Strategic Organizational Maintenance Squadron. In 1970 he was selected as aide-de-camp to the commandant of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

He reported to U-Tapao Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in March 1973, where he was officer in charge of the B-52 and KC-135 branches, and wing executive officer, 340th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Wing. After completing his overseas tour, he was assigned as executive officer to the director of aircraft maintenance and staff officer, Management Division, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

After graduating from the Armed Forces Staff College in January 1977, General Hummel moved to the Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, where he held a variety of jobs in contracting, supply, depot maintenance and materiel management. The general served as commander, 20th Organizational Maintenance Squadron, and assistant deputy commander for maintenance, 20th Tactical Fighter Wing, Royal Air Force Station Upper Heyford, England, from June 1979 until July 1982.

He was assigned as chief of the Strategic Plans Division, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, until July 1984. Upon graduation from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, he became deputy commander for maintenance, 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, Bitburg Air Base, West Germany.

In October 1986 he reported to Wueschheim Air Station, West Germany, where he was vice commander, then commander of the 38th Tactical Missile Wing. In August 1988 he was assigned as chief, Resources Management Division, Directorate of Materiel Management, Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. He also served as director of plans and programs from August 1989 until May 1990. In June 1990 he became assistant deputy chief of staff for Materiel Management, Air Force Logistics Command headquarters. In August 1991 he was appointed vice commander, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Provisional, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He assumed his current position in July 1992.

The general's military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.

He was promoted to brigadier general July 2,1992, with same date of rank.
