Source for this Roll of Honor is the "Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866 Vol. VII. 87th - 108th Regiments - Infantry". There are 319 men listed in the roll, 18 died in 1862, 260 in 1863, 23 in 1864 and 8 in 1865. By far the most were the result of the Vicksburg campaign. Illness was the cause of the majority of the deaths, particularly in the unhealthy environment of the Young's Point and Milliken's Bend were camps were perched on the banks of the Mississippi. The largest concentrations of 96th graves are the 18 at Chalmette, La, 26 at Memphis, Tenn., 28 at St. Louis, Mo., 114 in Vicksburg. The list leaves 53 in "unknown locations", mostly those that died aboard steamships on the Mississippi River who were likely buried at random places along the shore.
