MILLS COUNTY RECEIVES TWO MORE CIVIL WAR GRAVE MARKERS The Mills County Historical Survey Committee has received two additional monuments for the graves of Civil War Veterans buried in the county. A white Marble upright monument has been placed at the grave of James Thomas "Uncle Jimmie" Guthrie, 1840-1914, in the Trigger Mountain Cemetery. The stone was ordered by his grandson, Arnold Reynolds. Mr. Guthrie fought with the 13th Texas Brigade. The other, a flat gray granite monument, has been placed at the grave of Mr. Rubin A, Harris, 1840-1903, in the Center City Cemetery. Mr. Harris fought with Company A of the 12th Texas Calvary. The monument was ordered by his granddaughter, Mrs. Harve Willson. Six monuments have been received by the Historical Society and two more have been ordered.. Mrs. J. F. Barnes of Walnut Springs has ordered a monument for her grandfather, Joshau Jefferson Pollard, Co. C, 39th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was captured by the Union troops at Vicksburg.. Mrs. W.O. Holland has ordered one for her father . F. B. Minor, who served with Captain Wayne Bishop's Command as a mail carrier. Mr. Minor is buried at the Look Out Cemetery and Mr. Pollard at Center City. Additional information is needed to complete applications for Thomas G. Vines, Mullin, Cemetery; A.J. Price and John M. Green, North Brown Cemetery; and F.M. (Mead) Whitten, Center City. The Cemetery Committee earnestly requests that cooperation of all citizens of the county or anyone interested in the county in locating and securing markers for the graves of Veterans of the Civil War buried in the county whose graves are not permanently marked. During the Centennial of the Civil War, 1961-1965, the State of Texas, through Historical Societies in each county, is trying to compile a complete list of all Veterans of that conflict buried in the State, for a book to be published on building, battlefields, graves, and etc. of historical interest. The Mills County Historical Society is attempting to comply with the request by making a survey of cemeteries in the county, listing known Veterans and checking with others. Any man born in the 1840's or before is a potential veteran of the Civil War and anyone having ancestors in that age group may help by checking his military record and giving the information to the committee. Member of the Mills County Historical Survey Committee are Mrs. J. A. Hester, Chairman; Mrs. V. A. Hudson, Mrs. Floyd Manuel, Miss Love Gatlin, and Miss Ruth Ervin. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-gweagle-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Use your Browser's back button to return to beginning | |
Article in Mills County Memories, page 280 & 281, titled John Motley and Sarah Greer Lynch Hensley, submitted by Ina Zoe Davis Morgan, Compiled and Copyrighted by the Mills County Historical Commission, 1994 Mrs. Morgan wrote in the third paragraph, that John Motley Hensley served during the Mexican war from March 5, 1836 to May 1, 1836. Joining Captain Mosley Baker Company and serving with Capt Peter B. Dexter's Company until his discharge. His name is on the bronze plaque in the San Jacinto Monuments and is listed as auxillary detail due to the fact that he had an asthma attack on the day of the San Jacinto Battle that he was judged to be unfit for combat and left behind to guard the baggage and the spare horses. He was granted a land grant for this service. In another paragraph which is hard to tell, but believe she is still speaking of John Motley Hensley the father and not a son as she had wrote the Wayne Hensley was takining care of his aged parents and that his mother, Sarah had lost her eyesight. In the next paragraph Mrs. Morgan writes, " In 1898 John Motley Hensley died in Payne Gap and is buried in the Payne Gap Cemetery, in Mills County. His tombstone commemorates his Civil War Service in Company one, Thirtieth Regiment of the Texas Calvalry. C.S.A." John Motley Hensley would of been 61 years of age during the Civil war.
