Gard died on December 19th, 2003 from internal injuries resulting from a skiing accident in Vail, Colorado. He died doing one of the things he loved.

If you've read this far you may wonder about my memory concerning dates
and events. I've used my own three inch pile of letters home, carefully saved by mother;
my war orders (201 file); books, such as Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe" and
Breuer's "Operation Torch"; a number of War Department publications; and saved
newspapers and magazines to jog my memory. This is not meant to be a history text, but was
written to allow my descendants and friends to view one man's life in tough times. Maybe
this will help you to better understand one man and what he did for five years, 45 years
ago.
For mistakes I apologize.
