Lieut. Enos Artman

                                     Gloucester Point Va    Nov. 9th 1862
Dear Friend
            Your letter dated - - was duly
received also the enclosed postage stamp. Indeed
you must excuse me for getting that letter
franked. It was not done intentional but through
neglect. I wrote the letter in the evening
and put it in the company Report book and the
next morning the Sargant took the book to the
Adjt. and before I was aware of it the letter was
gone. I was real sorry for it but could not
remedy it. I know you will not take it as
an insult.
Capt. Jacob has arrived at last, how glad we all
were to see him. I went to Yorktown to meet
him and conducted him to his new tent
which I had previously prepared for him with
stove, bed, and table which is about all the furniture
our best furnished houses contain. Since his
arrival we have had considerable rain and snow
and very disagreeable weather generally, but this
evening the sky is once more clear
and the moon pours forth its brightness and
everything around us looks lovely.
The Captain is very much pleased with our camp
and thinks he can endure the hardships of
