A CARD.
MORRIS ISLAND, S C., February 9th, 1864.
Officers 104th, P. V. : —At your request, and the good of your
many friends at home, I shall endeavor, to the best of my
ability, rectify an article from me, bearing date January 7th,
and published in the columns of the Intelligencer January 26.
I am sorry to hear you say that the article applies to all offi-
cers of the 104th Regiment ; and furthermore that you believe
it will have a tendency in the eyes of your friends at home to in-
jure the reputation that you have already won by your good con-
duct from the organization of the regiment up to the present
time. Officers, you have looked upon the article in a wrong
light, and have substituted a different meaning from that of the
writer.
It was not my intention that it should apply to every officer
of the regiment, but simply to those who indulge in the intoxi-
cating beverage while on camp or picket duty. And here let me
add, had I preferred charges against them for bad conduct and
misbehavior in the face of the enemy to the Commanding General,
it would have subjected them a dishonorable discharge from
the service.
While I feel proud, and can boast of the many noble deeds
achieved by some of the officers, I can but say to others that I
have been sorely irritated with their disorderly conduct when
an attack was to be made upon the enemy.
Officers of the 104th—believing this will extol your character
to a higher standard than the article of the 7th degraded you,
I will permit a copy of it to be published in the county paper
for reformation Yours, very respectfully,
TIMOTHY CADWALLADER, Company K, 104th Regt. P. V.
