Dirge For The Victor.
On May 30, 1898, General Thomas J. Stewart delivered the Decoration Day address in front of the Doylestown monument. He quoted a beautiful dirge be- cause it was appropriate to the occasion: Let them rest, the fight is over. And the vict’ry bravely won. Softly wrap their banner round them. Lay them low, their work is done. Rest in peace! |
Rest in peace! Rest in peace—the fight is over. And the vict’ry is won. Leave we, now, our martyr- brothers. All to God and mem’ry then. Till within the Great Hereafter Freedom’s armies rise again. So, Farewell! Ah, Farewell! Till within the Great Hereafter. Peace proclaimed, we meet- again. |
