Dirge For The Victor.

On May 30, 1898, General

Thomas J. Stewart delivered the

Decoration Day address in front

of the Doylestown monument.

He quoted a beautiful dirge be-

cause it was appropriate to the

occasion:

Let them rest, the fight is over.

And the vict’ry bravely won.

Softly wrap their banner round

them.

Lay them low, their work is

done.

Rest in peace!

Rest in peace!

Rest in peace—the fight is over.

And the vict’ry is won.

Leave we, now, our martyr-

brothers.

All to God and mem’ry then.

Till within the Great Hereafter

Freedom’s armies rise again.

So, Farewell!

Ah, Farewell!

Till within the Great Hereafter.

Peace proclaimed, we meet-

again.
