Fleetwood Benson, at the age of 38, enlisted at Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pa on the 21st of February 1865 as Pvt. in Company E, 104th Regt., PA Vol. - an independent company commanded by Capt. Robert Johnson. He was honorably discharged at Portsmouth, Virginia on August 25, 1865 and died at Martinsburg, Blair County, Pa on November 18, 1882. At the time of service, he had four small daughters at home, with one on the way - Joseph, who was born September 30, 1865.
