Notes

Pvt. Morgan is our Union Army Soldier who was affectionately referred to as "The Fallsington Drummer Boy" during the Civil War. In 1930 - a newspaper article was written about his military service with the 104th PA (1861 - 1865). With the exception of his father's name (Harvey Morgan) - no other information regarding his family background was mentioned.

I have decided to trace Pvt. John W. Morgan's background with the hopes of discovering that he too is one of "Our Civil War Cousins" via our Sgt. Samuel Morgan md. to Grandfather Fryling's younger sister .. "Lanie Fryling".

Per 1870 Census (Bucks Co., Falls Twp., Fallsington, PA), John was listed as age 25 in June of 1870 and that his occupation was "Carpenter"; Assume that Phebe A. Morgan (age 20) is his wife - and family they were living with (John & Sarah Moon) are Phebe's parents. (This info now verified and confirmed accurate via John's Civil War Pension File records sent to me by Boston V.A. Div. on 11 Oct 1995.)

Per Civil War Pension File:

Pvt. John W. Morgan enlisted as a "Musician" with Co. G, 104th Regiment, PA Volunteers on 16 Sep 1861in Doylestown, Bucks Co., PA. and was Honorably Discharged at Morris Island, SC on 28 Feb 1864; He reenlisted the following day (29 Feb 1864) with Co. A, 104th PA and was Honorably Discharged at Portsmouth, VA on 25 Aug 1865.

Pvt. Morgan's CO's in the 104th PA were Gen. W.W.H. Davis, Capt. John E. Corcoron, 1st Lieut. John J. Wigtons.

At the time of his enlistment, Pvt. Morgan was 16 1/2 years old, 5'8", light complexion, Blue Eyes & Brown Hair.

At the time of his death in 1922 - John was 77 years old, had white hair, was completely blind in both eyes and suffered from numerous disabilities including severe digestive tract problems and heart disease. Cause of death recorded was Lobar Pneumonia.

John W. Morgan and Phebe (Moon) Morgan had no children during the 53 years of their marriage.

According to his death certificate, John is buried at Tullytown Cemetery. Funeral director was George Molden (Bristol, PA) Will visit grave and make sure it is properly marked with a Civil War Grave Marker.) Funeral Director: (215) 788-6612 / Contact: Mrs. Robinson (215) 945-3563
