Jacob Whitecar Afflerback

Before the war

He was 26 years old when he enlisted (3, 12 [29], 15 [32 in 1870], 16 [43 in 1880]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 15, 16). His parents were Jacob Afflerback (born in Germany) and Sarah B. [unknown surname] (born in Pennsylvania) (8).

When he was enlisted, he was a farmer (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 3 inches tall, had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years, as a private in company E, on 15 July 1862, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 3, 9, 13 [16 July 62, as corporal], 14). [Bates (1) has 16 July 1861, but this is a mistake, since company E had not started recruiting then, based on the other muster-in dates.] He was enlisted and mustered into service by Lieutenant Gregory (3).

He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg (9)

On 8 March 1863, he was detailed as a regimental hospital attendant (10).

He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (6).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 30 men who had more than fifteen months to serve who were willing to reenlist (7). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (12).

He was wounded on 12 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia (1).

He was promoted to corporal on 23 June 1864, for soldierly conduct in a recent battle (2) or for soldierly appearances (3) or soldierly qualities during the last campaign (5).

On 25 January 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 4 February 1865 (11).

He was discharged on 1 June 1865, at Camp Cadwalader, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by War Department special order (1, 4, 13, 14 [30 Aug 1865]).

After the war

His shell concussion caused a partial hearing loss, from which he suffered for his whole life (9).

On 22 February 1866, he married Fannie Bowers Booz (from Trenton, New Jersey), in Morrisville, Pennsylvania (8). They moved to New Jersey shortly after that (9). He worked as a shoemaker (9).

Jacob and Fannie had eight children (8, 17):

George Afflerback (born 1867)

Robert Afflerback (born 1869)

Charles Afflerback (born 1871)

Lillian Afflerback (born 1873)

Laura Afflerback (born 1876)

Jennie Afflerback (born 1878)

John Afflerback (born 1882)

Frank Afflerback (born 1886)

In 1870, he was living in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey (15). He was living with his wife Fannie and children George and Robert (15). He was a shoemaker (15).

In 1880, he was living in Upper Pittsgrove, Salem County, New Jersey (16). He was living with his wife Fannie and children Robert, Charles, Lillian, Laura, and Jennie (16). He was a farm laborer (16).

In 1890, he was living in Lower Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, New Jersey (14). He had been "wounded through [his] body" (14).

On 26 January 1891, he applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (19).

He died on 20 May 1909, in Salem County, New Jersey (8, 20). He was buried in Old Pittsgrove Baptist Churchyard, in Upper Pittsgrove, Salem County, New Jersey (20).

On 2 June 1909, his widow, Fannie B Afflerback, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (19).

In 1910, his widow Fannie was living in Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, New Jersey (17). She was a dressmaker (17).

In 1920, his widow Fannie was living at 23 Oak Street, Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey (18). She was living with her granddaughter Lillian Biggs (18).
