Cyrus C Cartledge

Before the war

He was born in 1841 (10, 2 [20 in 1861], 8 [37 in 1878], 9 [20 in 1861], 15 [19 in 1860], 16 [29 in 1870], 17 [40 in 1880], 22 [37 in 1878], 23 [9 in 1850]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 15, 16, 17, 23). He was born to Joseph and Mary Ann Cartledge (22).

His parents were well-to-do (9). He had four brothers, and at least one sister (9). His brother James Cartledge also served in the 91st Pennsylvania (9).

In 1850, he was living with his father, siblings, and several other people, in the fourth ward of Moyamensing, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (23). He had attended school within the year (23).

In 1860, he was living with his parents and siblings in the first ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a stone cutter (15).

When he was enlisted, he was a stone cutter (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service in company E on 20 August 1861 (1), at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, for 3 years (2, 12 [16 Oct 61]). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered in by Colonel Reiff (2). After enlisting, company E marched by his house, going to Independence Square (9). He was appointed corporal on 10 September 1861 (3).

He took care of his younger brother, James Cartledge (9). James later remembered him arranging to be in the same squad for various duties, taking care of cooking and finding water, and ensuring he was warm (9). On 3 May 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Cyrus wanted to search for James when the regiment was outflanked and driven out of the woods (9). The captain saved him by telling him that James had gone to the right with a squad, and Cyrus then found him reforming on the regimental colors (9).

He was promoted to sergeant on 1 January 1863, replacing Elliott (3).

He fought, as a sergeant, at the battle of Gettysburg (5). He was wounded there on 2 July 1863 (1, 2). A ball passed under a rib, and became "imbedded between the back bone and wall of the stomach"; it could not be removed (().

His brother James accompanied him as he was sent to Baltimore to recover (9). He was then sent to Philadelphia, where he was "allowed home comforts" (9).

He returned to the regiment, but was in pain (9).

On 1 March 1864, Colonel Gregory detached him to collect conscripts, at Philadelphia (6). He returned from detached service on 16 April 1864 (11).

He mustered out on 1 September 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when his term of service expired (1, 2, 3, 4, 12 [16 Oct 64], 14).

After the war

He was married to Emma (10). In 1900 and 1910, she had had five children, one of whom was alive (18, 19).

In 1870, he was living in the second ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was living with his wife Emma, his son J Lincoln, and three other people (16). He was a milk dealer (16).

On 11 September 1871 [?], he applied successfully for a pension (21).

His brother records: (9)

He died as he lived, bravely and uncomplainingly. When asked, "Cy can I do anything for you," he said: "No, I'm only waiting."

He died on 5 March 1878, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of the wounds he had received at Gettysburg (8, 10, 22). The funeral was from 612 Federal Street (his residence) (22). The services were held at Olivet Baptist Church (22). Nearly 500 men attended his funeral (9). He was buried at Sixth Street Union Vault (22).

In 1880, his widow Emma was living at 612 Federal Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). She was living with her children J Lincoln and George, and three other people (17). She was in the milk businesss (17).

In 1890, his widow, Emma Cartledge, was living at 612 Federal Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12, 13). George Clegg--a salesman, who served in the US Navy in the Civil War--was also living there (12, 13).

On 5 December 1898, his widow, Emma Cartledge, applied successfully for a pension (21).

In 1900, his widow Emma was living at 612 Federal Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). She was living with two boarders (18).

In 1910, his widow Emma was living at 1926 South 15th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). She was living with the same two boarders as in 1900 (19).

In 1920, his widow Emma was living at 1926 South Fifteenth Street (20). She was a lodger (20).

His widow Emma died in 1929 (10).
