Charles H Eckhart

Before the war

He may well be the Charles Henry Eckhart who was born on 9 July 1843, and was the son of Augustus Eckhart (5).

He was 20 years old when he was enlisted (6). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, black eyes, and brown hair (6). He had a scar on his right knee (6).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private in company C on 20 August 1861 (1, 6, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (6, 8).

He was detailed as a clerk in the Provost Marshall's Office, Washington DC, by an order dated 8 April 1863 (2), and was still there on 13 June 1863 (2) and 8 September 1863 (3). (The discharge register also mentions his being detailed, which suggests he was still detailed there when he was discharged (6).)

He was discharged at Washington DC, on 4 November 1863 by general order 491, Secretary of War (1, 4, 6).

After the war

On 18 December 1890, his widow, Francis A Eckhardt, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (9).
