Augustus Henry Eckhart

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia (3, 4). He was 42 years old when he was discharged in 1863 (3, 4).

He was married in 1842 (3). He had a son Charles Henry Eckhart, who may well be the Charles Eckhart who served in company C (3). Another son, Albert Howard, was born on 27 July 1858 (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 29 August 1861 (1, 3, 4, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McArthur (4, 5). He served as a private in company C (1).

He was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability on 20 February 1863, from General Hospital, David's Island, New York (3).

Apparently the regiment was never told he had been discharged. On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2), and he was declared a deserter on 30 April 1864 (1, 5 [from New York Hospital]) or on 31 March 1864 (6). And the company C descriptive book claims that he was "last heard from at Rhode Island sick" (4).

After the war

On 22 October 1890, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7).
