He was born in 1837 (11, 12, 20 [72 in 1910]). He was 25 years old when he was enrolled (7 [43 in 1880], 8, 13 [23 in 1860], 14 [32 in 1870]). He was born in Vermont (7, 13, 20).
In 1860, he was an M.D., living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with Charles Houghton (56, an M.D., born in Vermont, with $1600 in personal property), and Eliza Houghton (52, born in New Hampshire), who were presumably his parents (13). (They also had one servant living with them (13).)
He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (8).
According to the pension index by regiment, he also served in the 24th Pennsylvania Infantry, as Surgeon (2). However, the pension index by regiment does not list his service in the 124th Pennsylvania, and Bates' roster of the 24th Pennsylvania does not list Houghton; its service also overlaps with the 214th Pennsylvania (1 [vol.5 p.1021]). So I suspect the pension index reference is a mistake.
He was enrolled on 21 October 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 17 [Sep 61], 19 [Sep 61]). He was mustered into service as assistant surgeon on 6 November 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2 [4 Nov], 5, 8 [4 Nov], 15). He served as assistant surgeon (1, 2, 3, 5).
On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment (21).
He was discharged on 11 September 1862 (2). He was transferred and promoted on 12 September 1862 to surgeon of the 124th Pennsylvania infantry (1 [15 Sep], 2 [has 24th PA], 4, 5, 8 [18 Sep], 15 [15 Sep]).
He was mustered into service in the 124th Pennsylvania Infantry on 12 September 1862 (6, 15 lists the date of his muster into the 91st PA). He was mustered out with the regiment on 16 May 1863, when their term of service expired (6, 15 [17 May 63--but the narrative has 16 May 63]).
He was mustered into service as surgeon in the 214th Pennsylvania Infantry on 21 March 1865 (16). The 214th Pennsylvania served in guard and provost duty in the Shenendoah Valley until July 1865 (16). It was then ordered to Washington, where it garrisoned the city (16). A detachment was sent to Annapolis, Maryland, in November (16). He was mustered out with the regiment, at Washington DC, on 21 March 1866 (16, 17, 19, 24).
In 1870, Charles Houghton (32, born in Vermont) was a physician, living in the 20th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He owned $1500 in personal property (14). He was living with these people (14):
In 1880, he was living at 1528 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Emeline, his children Horace and Frank, his mother, and two servants (7). He was a medical doctor (7).
On 3 May 1882, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (24).
According to the 1906 and 1909 American Medical Directories, he graduated in 1892 from the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9, 10). According to the 1912 and 1914 American Medical Directories, he graduated in 1860 or 1859 from the Pennsylvania Medical College at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (11, 12).
In 1890, he was living at 1528 North 7th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17, 18). He was a physician (18). He reported one disability: "Ruptured" (17).
He applied successfully for a pension on 3 June 1891 and 20 [?] March 1907 (2).
He was included in a 1904 Who's who in Pennsylvania (24). He was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (24). He was then living at 1528 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24).
In 1906, he was practicing at 2031 North Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). By 1909, he had joined the American Medical Association (10). He was then practicing at Broad and Girard Avenue (10).
In 1910, he was living at 855 [North?] Broad Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (20). He was a physician (20). He was widowed (20).
In 1912, he was no longer practicing, and was living in Narberth, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (11). In 1914, he was living in Wynnewood, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (12).
He died on 6 June 1917 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2).
