Charles J King

Before the war

He was 19 years old when he enlisted in 1861 (8, 9, 16 [38 in 1880]). He was born in Lestershire [sic], England (8, 16).

When he enlisted, he was a blacksmith (8, 9). He was living in Philadelphia then (9).

Description

He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (8 [5'5"], 9 [5'8"]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 30 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 8, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (8). He served as a private in company A (1).

He may have been present when Captain Bowman (B) hit Lieutenant Kayser (B), on 26 July 1862 (3). If he was, he testified at Bowman's court martial (3).

He was sent to the Fairfax Seminary Hospital, in Alexandria, Virginia, on 17 June 1863, with sore feet (2).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (14).

On 2 July 1863, he was missing in action (7). On 9 July 1863, he was dropped from the rolls, by order of Brigadier General Garrard (7, 8). On the next consolidated morning report, dated 28 July 1863, he was reported as having been dropped because he was missing in the campaign (4).

On 31 August 1863, he was reported regained (5). He had not returned by 8 September 1863 (2). On 1 November 1863, he had returned to his company from hospital (6).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 9).

On 20 April 1864, he was reported absent without leave (10). He was reported returned on 22 April 1864 (11).

He was wounded in 1864, by 30 May 1864 (1, 15).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865, with his company (1, 9).

After the war

In 1880, he was living in West Conshohocken, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (16). He was a carpenter (16). He was living with his wife Maria, daughter Annie, mother-in-law Mary Dolan, and two other Dolan's (16).

On 5 November 1891, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 13).

On 17 April 1907, his widow, Maria King, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 13).

In 1910, his widow, Maria King, was living at 27 Front Street, West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (17). She was living with her daughter Annie, her daughter Marie Stemple, Marie's husband, and a niece (17).
