On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment (15).
He resigned on 19 January 1863 (1, 3, 4 [discharged on surgeon's certificate, 6 [discharged on surgeon's certificate], 7 [17 Jan]).
He was an original member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (14).

He attended the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivor's Association (2).
In 1890, he was living at 736 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).
In 1900, he was living at 736 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Clementine, his daughter Clemmie and her family, and two servants (11). He was a spring manufacturer (11).
On 10 June 1907, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8).
On 14 May 1909, his widow, Clementine T Matlack, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8).
In 1910, his widow, Clementine Matlack, was living at 736 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her daughter Clemmie and Clemmie's family, a boarder, and a servant (12). She was living on her own income (12).
In 1920, his widow, Clementine Matlack, was living at 736 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). She was living with her daughter Clemmie and Clemmie's husband, and two servants (13).
