He was born on 1 May 1835 (3, 11). He was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania (3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14). He was 28 years old when he was enlisted, and had been born in Pennsylvania (5, 8 [25 in 1860], 9 [30 in 1870], 10 [45 in 1880], 11 [65 in 1900], 12 [74 in 1910], 14 [16 in 1850]).
In 1850, he was living in Beale Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with A and E Plank (presumably his parents), along with various other Plank's (presumably his siblings) (14). He had attended school within the year
In 1860, he was living in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with Elizabeth Plank (presumably his mother), and other Plank's (presumably his siblings) (8). He was a laborer (8).
On 20 October 1864, he married Margaret Noll, in York, Pennsylvania (3, 11). In 1900, she had had nine children, four of whom were alive, including these (3 [2 children], 11):
When he enlisted, he was a laborer (3, 5).
He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair (3, 5).
He served in the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (of York County), company E (2, 4, 7). He was mustered into service on 13 September 1861 (3, 4, 6). He was captured at Carter's Woods and given a 30 day furlough after his parole (3). He was discharged on 13 October 1864, because his term had expired (3, 4, 6 [Jun (?) 1864]).
He was a substitute for Henry Miller, of Littlestown (3). He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 91st Pennsylvania on 24 March 1865 (1, 3, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd (5). He reported for duty on 24 March 1865 (5). His service was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (5). He served as a private in company D (1).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1).
In 1869, he moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania (3).
In 1870, he was living in the fifth ward of Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Margaret and their presumed children Anna, Mary, and Amelia (9). He was a laborer, and owned $200 in personal property (9).
On 20 April [illegible year], he applied successfully for a pension (7).
In 1880, he was living on Filbert Avenue, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Margaret, and children Mary, Amelia, and Delilah (10). He was a laborer (10).
In 1890, he was living in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (6). He had had chronic diarrhea and rheumatism (6).
In 1900, he was living at 933 Second Street, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Margaret and daughter Delilah (11). He was a day laborer (11).
His wife died on 27 June 1901 (3).
On 20 August 1903, he married a divorcee, Lucy Mitstifer (3, 12). (She hadn't actually bothered to divorce her first husband (3). In 1910, she had had nine children, all of whom were alive--apparently all from her first marriage (12).)
In 1910, he was living on Main Road, Cogan House Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his second wife, Lucy (12). He was living on his "own income" (12).
He died on 30 December 1910 (3). He is buried in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (3).
On 20 [?] September 1916, his widow, Lucy Plank, applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7).
In 1920, his widow, Lucy Plank, was living in Cogan House Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (13).
