Before the war

He was 52 years, 3 months, and 9 days old when he died (on 31 May 1888) (4). He was 29 [28?] when he was enlisted (10).

He had six brothers and two sisters (7):

Description

He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had blue eyes, sandy hair, and a florid complexion (9).

During the war

At least four of his brothers served in the Civil War (7). His brother Jeremiah Small served in company F (6, 7). Jacob served in company F of the 165th Pennsylvania, and was a veteran volunteer in company C of the 152nd Pennsylvania (7). William served in company H of the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry from 19 September 1861 to 13 October 1864, and was wounded at the Wilderness, with a bullet lodged near his spine (2, 7). David served in company C of the 202nd Pennsylvania (7). He also had a brother Daniel, who was married to Agnes V Butler, and is not the Daniel Small who served in company C of the 202nd Pennsylvania (married to Anne Marie Heidler), or the Daniel Small who served in the 152nd Pennsylvania, 3rd Heavy Artillery, Co U (married to Julia) (8).

He was drafted from Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (16th congressional district) (1, 9, 10). He was mustered into service as a private on 28 February 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 10, 11). He served in company F (1).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 10, 11).

After the war

He was a plasterer (3). He was not a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (3). He was married, and had eight children, two of whom died before he did (3, 7).

He died on 31 May 1888, in York, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 4). He was buried at St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery, York, Pennsylvania (2, 4).

In 1890, his widow, Joanna B Small, was living in York, York County, Pennsylvania (11).

On 12 July 1890, his widow, Johanna Small, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (12).
