Edward E Wallace

Before the war

He was born in March 1825 (22). He was 37 years old when he enlisted (14, 21 [44 in 1870], 22 [75 in 1900]). He was born in New York (21, 22).

He served in the "old wars", that is, the wars between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War (4, 16, 32, 33). Because he is not listed in Heitman's Historical Register, I assume he was not an officer (12). He probably is the Edward E Wallace who enrolled in company F of the First Regiment in December 1846 (25). He marched to Pittsburgh, was mustered in at Pittsburgh as a sergeant on 15 December 1846 by Lieutenant Fields (25). He was promoted to First Sergeant on 11 June 1847 (25). He was discharged on 28 July 1848 (25).

He married Martha [unknown surname] in 1849/1850 (22). In 1900, she had had six children, three of whom were alive (22).

In 1850, he was living in the Spring Garden, 3rd ward, in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (23). He was a painter (23). He was living with his wife Martha and child Joseph (23).

In 1860, he was living in the 14th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a painter, and owned $3000 in real estate, and $300 in personal property (24). He was living with his wife Martha, four children, and two other people (24).

He lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (14).

During the war

He served in company B of the 20th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (4, 16, 32, 33). The company was mustered in on 30 April 1861, and the regiment was mustered out on 24 July 1861 (13). He served as Captain (13).

On 20 August 1861, the War Department authorized him to recruit an infantry regiment (30). He began recruiting a regiment by 29 August 1861 (1 [page 186]; 30, 31). A recruiting poster for company K of his regiment, commanded by Charles L Brown, dated 2 September 1861, describes his regiment as a regiment of "Sharp Shooters" (19). His regiment was camped on Islington Lane, across from Odd Fellows' Cemetery, not far from Colonel Gregory's (28, 32). On 31 August 1861, he advertised a meeting of company commanders for 11 AM (29).

By 26 September 1861, he was in camp at Camp Edwards (28).

His regiment was consolidated with Gregory's regiment in October 1861, by the 19th (1 [page 186], 33).

He was enrolled on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was mustered into service, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 4 December 1861 (1, 4, 9, 14, 17).

He and Major Todd did most of the instruction while the regiment was in Alexandria, since Colonel Gregory was Provost Marshall (1 [p.186], 8).

On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment (26).

He presided over a general court martial, in Alexandria Virginia, formed by special order 157, Headquarters, Military District of Washington, 9 August 1862 (10, 11, 20). It was originally to meet at the corner of 19th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC, at 10 o'clock on Monday 11 August 1862 (11, 20).

The court martial found Enoch Brewster and Alpheus Bowman guilty and sentenced them to be dismissed (10, 20).

He was discharged on 10 January 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 14, 17 [1 Jan 63]). (According to Bates (1 [p.188], he resigned; according to the Official Army Register (5), he was discharged. I assume the difference is not significant.)

On 16 June 1863, he announced that he was raising a new regiment, with its headquarters at the Northwest corner of Ridge Avenue and COates Street (37).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 20th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (21). He was a painter, and owned $15,000 in real estate and $6,000 in personal property (21). He was living with his wife Martha, and his children Joseph, Catharine, and Esnance [? Imogene?] (21).

In 1880, he was living at 1527 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with his wife Martha Wallace, and children Joseph, Kate, and Imagen, and their families (15). He worked in painter supplies (15).

He was on the committee of arrangements for the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivors' Association (2, 36), and attended the meeting (3).

In 1890, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). He had rheumatic pleurisy (17). He worked in paints at 1416-17 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived at 1529 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17).

In 1900, he was living at 1529 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (22). He had a paint and [illegible] business (22). He was living with his wife Martha, two daughters, a granddaughter, and a servant (22).

He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 12 May 1902 and on 2 March 1907 (4, 16).

He died in 1908 (4).

Notice that the executors of his estate filed their account was published on 8 February 1909 (27).
