Welcome to The Thin Blue Line This site is dedicated to all the men from the six constituent Sussex Police Forces and the three constituent Surrey Police Forces who fought in the First World War. In particular it records the details of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of King and Country. Like many other internet sites concerning the First World War I have made no attempt to comment on the conflict. Critical analysis of the whole war or individual campaigns or leaders is best left to those who are academically able to sustain their views against praise or criticism. |

The men recorded here fought and died in the social circumstances prevalent for their time and are not judged by current thinking. I am often asked how this site came about in the first place and the answer in reality is by accident. Having served in the Police for thirty years and having retired whilst at Lewes Police Station, in East Sussex, I was always curious about the Memorial Tablet above one of the office doors. A trip to the Somme in 1999 to find the grave of my maternal grandmothers first husband then lit the spark that has resulted in this website. Further research indicated another memorial at Eastbourne Police Station and mention of other men in the histories of long defunct individual Sussex Police Forces. Having previously also served with the Surrey Police it was a natural progression to include the details of their officers. Since its original conception the site has gone through many transformations and has emerged into this new and enlarged one.
