Alfred Hugh Winters
Alfred
Hugh Winters was born June 7, 1837 in Giles County, Tennessee the son of Orrin
Lemon Winters and Susannah W. Elroy. He
died January 17, 1917 in Oklahoma. He
married on January 20, 1859 in Texas to Mahala Sylvania Daniels, daughter of
George and Sylvania (Pierce) Daniels. Both
Alfred and Mahala are buried in the Kilgore Cemetery.
Alfreds
military records are a bit vague and confusing. On the muster roll of Jan.-Feb.
1864 he is listed as "Joined from desertion on Nov. 1, 1863. Name does not
appear in column of names present." This muster roll lists his enlistment
date as Nov. 1, 1862. He is shown as enlisted in Hallettsville by Capt. Gulliam
for the duration of the war. In November 1864 he was
listed being Furloughed. Alfred was a prisoner of war, but where and when he
was captured is not listed. He was paroled on July 24, 1865. It list his
residence as Lavaca Co. TX.
