Marion Jasper Duff
Marion Jasper Duff was born September 27, 1833 in Shelby County, Tennessee, the son of James Carson Duff and Melvira Bell. His grandparents are James L. Duff, Jr. and Mary Parks. His great grandparents are James L. Duff, Sr. and Agnes Carson. His great great grandparents are Samuel Duff and Margaret Montgomery of Scotland.. He married about 1859 to Catherine Coons. He died March 12, 1881 in Gonzales County, Texas and is buried in DUFF cemetery located one-half mile from Praha, Fayette Co. TX.. Catherine's Confederate Pension Application #17697

Marion Jasper Duff
was enlisted into the Second Texas Cav. On
September 23, 1861 at Ft. Brown Texas. He was 28 years old at the time. His
horse was valued at $ 100 and his equipment at $ 20. Before he left
the service he had been promoted to Sargeant.
On the Jan. 1862 Muster Roll he is paid $ 39.20 for the use of his
personal horse. By Oct. 1862 he has reenlisted while stationed near Helena in
Karnes County.
The Muster Roll of June 30, 1863 it is noted that he is on Detached
Service with Col. Shoalwater on the Shoalwater Expedition. It also notes that he
is paid $ 24.40 for the use of his horse. On the September Muster Roll it
notes that he is on furlough as of August, 1864. On the October 1864 record he
is still noted as being on furlough.
The last record on Duff notes that he was admitted to the hospital in Columbus,
Texas on Jan. 24, 1863 and diagnosed with Rupea Herepes.
