Pvt. John W. Key enlisted on September 23, 1861 at Ft. Brown Texas at the age of 23. His horse was valued at $ 50 and his personal equipment at $ 15.

 

Muster Roll dated Nov. 1861     - Present

Muster Roll of January 1862       - Present

Muster Roll of Oct. 31, 1862   - His horse is now valued at $ 130 and his equipment at $ 45. At that time he is paid $ 24.40 for the use of his horse.

 

Muster Roll of June 30, 1863 - He has reenlisted on June 1, 1863 in Galveston by Capt. McRae. He is paid $ 48.80 for the use of his horse. It also notes that he is in the Hospital at New Iberia. 

( I believe this is in Louisiana )

 

Muster Roll of Aug. 1863  under " arrest and confinement."

Muster Roll of Feb. 1864 notes that he is on sick furlough since Oct. 1, 1863.

Muster Roll of July 1864 - Indicates that he is off sick furlough and has returned to the company. It also notes that he is on Detached Service since June 10, 1864 as a courier in Galveston Texas.

Muster Roll of Feb. 1865 - " Courier at Columbus, Texas "

 

His last record notes that he was Paroled as a POW on June 30, 1865.

THE STATE OF TEXAS, County of Burnet

I, Mrs. Sarah E. Key, do hereby make application for a pension
pursuant to the provisions of Articles 6204 to 6227, inclusive, of
the Revised Civil Statutes of 1925 as amended by H.B. No. 150,
passed by the Forty-second Legislature at its Regular Session and
all other laws of this State relating thereto.

I am the widow of John W. Key, deceased, who departed this life on
the 28th day of June, A.D. 1909, in the county of Burnet, in the
State of Texas.

I have not remarried since the death of my said husband, and I do
solemnly swear that I was never divorced from my said husband, and
that I never voluntarily abandoned him during his life, but
remained his true, faithful and lawful wife up to the date of his
death. I was married to him on the 29th day of March A.D. 1865; in
the county of Lavaca, in the state of Texas.

My husband, the said John W. Key, enlisted and served in the
military service of the Confederate States during the war between
the States of the United States; that he was a soldier who under
special laws of the State of Texas during said war, that he was a
soldier of the militia of the State of Texas who was in active
service during said war. That my said husband served honorably
from the date of his enlistment until the close of the war....He
was honorable discharge or paroled June 30th 1865, at the close of
War

That I have been a bona fide resident of this state continuously
since the 10th day of November A.D. 1845.

Sitha Jennings, who are personally known to me to be creditable
citizens, who, being by me duly sworn on oath state that they
personally know that Mrs. Sarah E. Key, applicant for a pension as
the widow of John W. Key deceased, is in truth and fact the widow
of John W. Key , deceased; that they personally know that she has
not remarried since the death of her husband, for whose service in
the army she claims a pension, and that they have no interest in
this claim.

The records show that John W. Key, not borne as John Willis Key,
private, Company K, 2nd Regiment Texas Cavalry (2nd Texas Mounted
Rifles), Confederate States Army, was enrolled September 23, 1861,
at Brownsville, age 23 years.

Muster roll for January and Febuary, 1864, last roll on file,
shows him Absent, “sick furlough since October 1, 1863.”

His name appears on regimental Return for the month of April,
1865, which shows him on June 30, 1865, at Columbus, Texas.

APPLICATION FOR MORTUARY WARRANT
STATE OF TEXAS, County of Gillespie

I, Charley Althaus do hereby certify that I am the person to whom
is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the
late Mrs. Sarah E. Key, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas,
and whose file number is 50170 and whose original county was
Burnet.

The said pensioner, Mrs. Sarah e. Key, died on the 15th day of
March, 1935,near the town of Fredericksburg, County of Gillespie,
Texas.

The pensioner died in the home of Charley Althaus who was related
to the pensioner as son-in-law.

That the warrant which application is hereby made for, shall be
applied to paying all or part of the expenses incurred by the said
pensioner, Mrs. Sarah E. Key.

I further certify that the warrant for the current quarter has not
been cashed by the pensioner, to the best of my knowledge and
belief.

I am related to the pensioner as son-in-law that my postoffice
address is Johnson City, Tex.

I, Arthur Schoetter, do certify that I am an undertaker in the
town of Fredericksburg, County of Gillespie, State of Tex., that I
had charge of the body of Mrs. Sarah E. Key, who died near the
town of Fredericksburg, County of Gillespie, State of Texas, on
the 15th day of March 1935. That said body was prepared for burial
by me on the 15th day of March, 1935 and that I am of the opinion
that warrant herein applied for, should be issued to the said
Charley Althaus who makes the foregoing application.

I, Joesph J. Hannus, M.D. , do certify that I am a practicing
physician and that I attended Mrs. Sarah E. Key in her last
illness, and am of the opinion that her ailments were (old age)

Warrant above requested should be issued in the name of the
aforementioned applicant, in accordance with Act passed by the
Thirty-eighth Legislature, and approved, March 2, 1923
