Smith Leazar were the sons of William George Leazar and Dovina Minerva Walker.
They were also the nephews of Co. K Capt. Goldsmith Walker and Sgt. Samuel
Walker.
William George Leazar and Dovina Minerva Walker were married on 19 Dec 1833 in
Newton Co., Georgia. They migrated to Tippah County, Mississippi, joining
other members of the Walker family. Sometime after 1850 the family
migrated again, this time to Texas. They located in the Lavaca, Gonzales
and Fayette County area, near the towns of Moulton, Waelder and Flatonia.
John Alexander Leazar married Nancy Laurie Thomasson on 24 May 1868 in Moulton,
Lavaca County, Texas. They had five children.
At age 85 John Alexander Leazar applied for a Soldier's Pension in Fayette
County, Texas. He stated that he enlisted in 1861 and served until 1865.
Lon A. Smith, Comptroller of Public Accounts for Texas stated that John Leazar
was a member of Co. K which was "... at first ... a band of Rangers, then
they formed Comp. K Pyron Regiment - organized in Texas ...."
An Affidavit of Witness was also provided by J.T. Thompson, another member of
Co. K. He reported, "John Leazer (sic) first served as a Ranger and
this band of Rangers formed Company K Pyron Regiment and served from 1861 to
1865 and his service was one of credit to his country."
John Alexander Leazar's record from the War Department reads, "John A.
Leazear (sic), prt. Capt. John Donelsons Co. K, 2nd Tex. Mtd. Rifles,
subsequently Co. K, 2nd Reg. Tex. Cav. C.S.A. (Col. Pyron) Enlisted Oct. 15,
1861 in Moulton ...."
John Leazar's application was approved, but he died before he was able to
collect. Subsequently his widow, Nancy, applied for a Widow's Pension
(#4131) and received a pension until her death. John and Nancy
Leazar are buried in the Old Moulton Cemetery, Lavaca County, Texas.

Pvt. John A. Leazear also enlisted
at Moulton Texas on October 15, 1861. On the Muster
Roll of Jan. 1862 it notes that he is paid $ 38.80 for the use of his horse.
In the April Muster Roll is only notes
that he is present.
Muster Roll
of October 1862 indicates that the Cavalry has set a value of $ 65.00 on his
horse and $ 45.00 on his equipment. He
is at that time paid $ 24.40 for the use of his horse. The June Muster Roll
notes that he is again paid for the use of his horse, this time its $ 48.80. It also indicates that he has reenlisted as of June 26, 1862.
The company is stationed at Helena at the time.
