Joseph
H. Williams enlisted at Ft. Brown on Sept. 23, 1861. He was 18 years old at the
time and enlisted for a period of 12 months. The Cavalry set a value of $ 80 on
his horse and $ 25 on his equipment.
The Muster Roll of Jan.1, 1862 indicates that he is due pay from enlisted date
and is paid $ 37.20 for the use of his horse. He is paid by Capt. J.A. Settle
On October 31, 1862 he is again paid for the use of his horse. This time, it is
worth $ 24.40. His horse is now valued at $ 125 and his equipment at $ 45.
The Muster Roll of June 30, 1863 indicates that he reenlisted on June 26, 1863
at Escondido. It also notes that he is "Absent, Supposed to be
a prisoner of war- taken June 21, 1863." They were at LaFourche
Crossing at the time.
August 1863 Muster Roll - " Still Prisoner."
February 1864 Muster Roll - ' Absent, Paroled as prisoner but has not reported
yet."
There is one further record indicating that he is in the Hospital on Sept.10,
1863 with a disease. "Febris Typhoides." This is
probably Typhoid Fever.
