Pvt. Ross Allen enlisted on September 23, 1861 in Ft. Brown Texas.
He was 35 years old at the time. Upon enlisting the Cavalry set a
value of $ 80 on his horse and $ 20 on the personal equipment to
be used while serving in the Second Cavalry.

On the Muster Roll dated Jan. 1862 it notes that he has been paid
$ 39.20 for the use of his horse. It also notes that he is on extra
duty as a  hospital steward. On the Muster Roll of February 1862
it notes that he is due his regular pay from enlistment date and
is due extra pay as the hospital steward since November 1, 1861.
The next undated roll shows that he is present, is still due his
regular pay and is still on duty at the hospital.
There is an unmarked card showing that he is due $ 53 regular pay
from Sept. 23, 1861 till April 1862. He is paid at this time. It
also notes that he is stationed at Ringgold Barracks at the time.
