J. Samuel Winters
Additional Information: Samuel like most of the other Winters in the 2nd Cav.
enlisted on Sept. 23, 1861 at Ft.Brown in Brownsville, TX.
He was 20 years old at the time. His enlistment officer was Capt. John Donelson.
He enlisted for a period of 12 months. The Cavalry set a value of $50.00 on his
horse and $20.00 on his equipment. On the muster roll of Jan. 1, 1862 it indicates that he was paid by Capt. J.G. Little and was also paid
$39.20 for the use of his horse. In Oct. 31, 1862 he
reenlisted near Helena, which is in Karnes County. His horse was now valued at
$75.00 and his equipment at $35.00. He was also paid $24.40 for the use of his
horse. In April 1864 he is listed as absent since April 21, 1864 and in Oct.of
64 he is listed as a deserted. Being listed as a deserter is evidently
quite common. I believe this may be a communication problem of the times
as much as anything. The men were often dead, on furlough or in a hospital and
the military didn't always get the word. The men sometimes on furlough from a
wound and were too ill to return or had died at home.
