Valentine Somerhalter - CO K 2nd Texas Cavalry

Valentine Somerhalter

Valentine enlisted at Ft. Brown which is in Brownsville Texas.  He joined on Sept. 23, 1861 at the age of 45. At that time the Cavalry set a value of $80.00 for his horse and $20.00 on his equipment. On the Muster Roll of Jan. 1, 1862 his record indicates that he has not been paid since enlistment, but he is  paid $39.20 for the use of his personal horse. He is still listed as 45 years old. On the Muster Roll of February 1862 it indicates that he was paid and that he is on detached service with Captain Donelson. His last record indicates that he was discharged on December 16,1862. It was a disability discharge. His discharge was probably due to being wounded but there is no indication on his record.
