Part of the reforested area of the Great Southern Lumber Company, Bogalusa,
Louisiana. Members of the American Legion promote reforestation sentiment. The
Great Southern Lumber Company's Service Flag contained 359 stars. Compliments
of the Magic City Post No. 24 American Legion, Bogalusa, Louisiana. (Card #57517)

Sign reads:

COMPANY 'G'
Hundreds of thousands of young growing evergreen
little pine trees were dedicated to the memory of
every soldier, living and dead, who enlisted in the
World War from Washington Parish. What more
fitting, than growing evergreen pine tree?
Always lifting, lifting its leafy arms to pray.
These are the names of those who paid the
last full measure of devotion.

If you can identity any of the men in the photo please contact me and tell me their names and which number they correspond to:

Harry W. Pine, of Bogalusa, 2nd Lieutenant in the 353rd Infantry, won the Distinguished Service Cross.

"Harry W. Pine, of Bogalusa, was second lieutenant in the 353rd Infantry. On October 4, 1918, the regiment was before the town of Haumont, which was being stubbornly defended. In order to effect the capture of the place, Lieutenant Pine took a patrol of eight men and undertook to gain entrance. He worked his way through the enemy outposts and had almost reached his goal when he encountered a German patrol. He unhesitatingly attacked and defeated the foe. Then he made his way through the entire town, captured two prisoners, and brought them as well as much useful information back to camp." Page 14, “Winners of Distinguished Service Cross”

Source: Bogalusa Story by C. W. Goodyear (1950, Privately Printed, Printed by Wm. J. Keller, Inc.- Buffalo, New York); I'm not sure which Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR is, but I believe it is Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR, III. There are 208 pages in the book. On page 56 is the above photo and on page 72 is a genealogical chart: Descendants of Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR and Ellen Portia CONGER. These are not the GOODYEARs of the Goodyear Tire Company, but rather the GOODYEARs of the Great Southern Lumber Company.

Anson Conger GOODYEAR
June 20, 1877 -

Bradley GOODYEAR
October 18, 1885 - ?

Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR, Jr.
April 6, 1883 - ?

Anson Conger (A. C.),  Bradley, and Charles Waterhouse (C. W., II) GOODYEAR, Jr.'s parents were: C. W. (Charles Waterhouse) GOODYEAR and Ellen Portia CONGER who were originally from the Buffalo, NY area. He was the Vice-President of the Great Southern Lumber Company. His brother, Frank Henry GOODYEAR was the President of the company.

C. W. (Charles Waterhouse) GOODYEAR and Frank Henry GOODYEAR's parents were Bradley GOODYEAR, a country doctor in New York, and Esther P. KINNE Goodyear.

A little book review:

C. W. (Charles Waterhouse, III, I believe) GOOODYEAR wrote a book about Bogalusa, Washington Parish, Louisiana; his family's business (and genealogy); and The Great Southern Lumber Company which merge into the Gaylord Container Corporation in 1937-8: Bogalusa Story by C. W. Goodyear (1950, Privately Printed, Printed by Wm. J. Keller, Inc.- Buffalo, New York). He did a wonderful job and the book is filled with all sort of tidbits. It is very well illustrated for its time. As you can see from the above photograph, the photos and illustrations are in black and white. Quite a bit of the book is about his family but the majority is about Bogalusa and the Great Southern Lumber Company.

Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR, I (born: Oct. 15, 1846 in Cortland, Cortland County, New York - died: April 16, 1911 in Buffalo, New York) married Ellen Portia CONGER (born: August 30 or 31, 1853 in Collins Centre, New York - died: September 29, 1940 in Buffalo, New York) on March 23, 1876.

They had 3 sons and a daughter:

1.) Anson Conger (A. C.) GOODYEAR (born: June 20, 1877; married on: June 29, 1905 to: Mary FOREMAN)

2.) Esther Permelia GOODYEAR (born: May 20, 1881; married on: January 20, 1910 to: Arnold B. WATSON)

3.) Charles Waterhouse (C. W., II) GOODYEAR, Jr. (born: April 6, 1883; married on: June 2, 1908 to: Grace RUMSEY)

4.) Bradley GOODYEAR (born: October 18, 1885; married on: June 23, 1910 to: Jeanette BISSELL) Note: His son, Bradley GOODYEAR, Jr.Bradley GOODYEAR, was killed during WWII, see below.

Great Southern Lumber Company has changed hand many time since then, and it goes something like this: Great Southern Lumber Company --> Gaylord Container Corporation --> Crown-Zellerbach/Gaylord Container Corporation --> Gaylord Container Corporation --> Temple-Inland Inc.

Also see the Salmen-Fritchie House (Slidell, LA) which is listed on the National Historic Register. It was the  location of the “Wedding of the Century,” which occurred on January 27, 1922 between Col. William Henry SULLIVAN (from Bogalusa, LA) and Ella Rose SALMEN (of Slidell, LA). Her father was Fritz SALMEN, a Swiss immigrant, who "along with his brothers Albert and Jacob, established the Salmen Lumber and Brickworks Company."

Col. Sullivan was the manager of the Great Southern Lumber Company and Bogalusa Paper Company. These  two companies owned by the founder of the Goodyears: GOODYEARs (Frank Henry GOODYEAR and Charles Waterhouse GOODYEAR), William Henry SULLIVAN, and others who erected a sawmill on the Bogue Lusa Creek in 1906: "Magic City of the Deep South."

This wedding "united two of the South’s largest lumber interests."
